You can adjust the brightness, so I keep my pretty low so it is not distracting, but bright enough to be able to see the time from a distance.There are a few things, mentioned in other reviews, that I don't care for, but since I'm not staring at the thing 24-7, it really doesn't bother me that much.1. If you are only using the memory card for this device and not sharing it with another device (ie portable MP3 player), this isn't a problem.2. I scanned a bunch of my daughter's artwork to a memory card and put that in the device. I haven't figured out how to mix/shuffle music on my memory card, but the radio has worked so well that I haven't really tried it out other than to make sure I can play music from the card.3. Also, the seller sent it very quickly.
Now they have a feature - Auto Dim) that will turn off the display at a specified time. You can always hit the snooze control (Repeat Alarm/Brightness Control) button to see the time in the middle of the night, but otherwise it's completely dark. (It's called the Auto Dim Timer so it can auto dim from 10pm to 6am or whatever you like)I purchsed it for my desk, and not the bedroom, so the brightness issue wasn't a show-stopper for me. But then I discovered they fixed it and I didn't see that reported in the various review.
The design is very sleek and clean. I use mine as an alarm so I have it set to autodim at bedtime and back to bright again in the morning. This is a great product without competition in the market. Plug in a memory card or USB drive and you can play MPEG videos, JPEG photos or MP3 music. But like I said, there really is nothing else like this so these are small issues. The screen is bright, clear and big. Very cool.The brightness can be adjusted for different ambient light conditions.
I sleep with my eyes closed so it's not a problem. Most of the issues raised by older reviews have been corrected.You should buy this unit. The screen is pretty large so be aware that even dimmed the total amount of light is probably more than you're used to. Although the resolution is not particularly high, it does a good job of upconverting your photos and videos. You can set the display to play the videos or pictures sequentially or randomly in full screen mode. :)My wish list for future includes the following: picture sequencing in clock mode, headset/speaker jack, auto clock set via satellite (a feature becoming more common in clock radios). I think I'll buy one for my desk as well.

As soon as you use it you'll agree its a great gift idea. I was looking for a unique alarm clock to perform the basic functions that an alarm clock could and stumbled upon this. Yes, as stated in previous reviews, there are certain key aspects to it that can be improved but if your looking for an alarm clock with a large screen, cool features and that looks great in the bedroom, this is it. Granted the picture quality isn't great but its alarm clock, what do you expect. For its basic functionality, aesthetics and good features I rate this a 4 out of 5.
